Ways to wear the cold shoulder trend for Autumn

15th September 2016 / Autumn/Spring Transition Outfits,Personal Shopping,Seasonal Trends

Off-the-shoulder tops were a key trend during the summer and their cousin, the cold-shoulder, looks like it’s set to carry on the trend for showing the shoulders through the Autumn. Brrr – I hear the cry – how can you wear a cold shoulder when it’s getting chillier? I’m pleased that the retailers have considered this and as you can see in my recommended items below there’s plenty of variations from evening tops to sweaters.

When styling an outfit the key is to show off your best assets so if you like your shoulders, then why not go for it. This is a trend anyone can wear whatever your age or size because the cold-shoulder styling is a little more forgiving than the off-the-shoulder or bardot style, due to strategically placed straps to cover up your bra strap. Where the split opens on the top part of your shoulder it gives a teasing show of flesh without it being too much.

If you’re going to a nice restaurant for a meal wear one with a pair of black evening trousers – all the detail is on your top half so it’s bound to keep your dinner partners attention. A sweater style cold shoulder worn with a pair of jeans and flats is a fabulous way to dress down on a weekend but still look super stylish. Generally I wouldn’t recommend this style for work. Of course it depends on the workplace dress code and culture but the flash of shoulder flesh could be distracting for colleagues and/or customers and it may have a negative influence on your credibility. Keep to closed shoulder styles for work!

Here’s 4 key points to consider when purchasing a cold-shoulder top for Autumn.

1) If it’s a lighter weight fabric ensure it’s in the darker Autumn colours. Corals, whites, turquoises are summer colours and it would look a little dated in these lighter and brighter colours.

2) Choose heavier fabrics such as a knitted sweater style. Caution these can add bulk, particularly if they have a cable knit pattern. Yet let’s not assume everyone is bigger in the bust (like me), therefore a cable knit is great for someone who wants to increase their bust size, hence why I’ve included in the recommended items below. Choosing a sweater style is when you can choose a lighter colour such as cream, stone or winter white, if you wish, however there’s some lovely bottle greens, oranges and mustards out there.

3) Go for long sleeves. Aswell as the obvious practicalities of keeping you warmer it differentiates it from a summer top. Long sleeves also lengthen and elongate making the style more elegant and slimming. If you find one with fluted sleeves or bell sleeves even better.

4) Wear a co-ordinated shawl or wrap to keep off the chill. A poncho or blanket wrap is perfect for this.
